Neil Jaggar - I’ve been associated with the club ever since I was born

By Samantha Shilton

Name: Neil Jaggar

Age: 47

Nickname: Nothing repeatable! Or it’s usually Jags.

Position at club: President.

How long have you been connected with the club: A long time.

How did this come about: Well my dad, Peter Jaggar, is the oldest member of the club. He’s played from round about the age of 11 to being 70, he’s been on the committee, he’s done ground work, he’s done all the different jobs, captained both teams. My grandma and granddad live just across the road there, so I’ve been associated with the club ever since I was born really. I started playing in the second team when I was 11, and now I’m 47, so I’m probably the longest playing member now, up until three years ago anyway.

Favourite sportsman/woman: Its probably a toss-up between Jackie Stewart, Bruce McLaren, and Damon Hill’s dad, I’ve forgotten his name!

Favourite TV programme: I don’t think I’ve got a particular favourite, it’s more a “style” than a programme, like action and detective shows. Going back a bit, I like The Sweeney, Morse, and then more recent things you’ve got like The Sarah Connor Chronicles which are good.

Favourite pastime: Cricket and Motor Sport.

What music do you like: Very, very wide-ranging, from Classical to Heavy Rock. I’m just changing the CDs in my car actually; out of six CDs, five are classical and the other one is Meatloaf. Phil Collins will go in tomorrow too.

Favourite film: Definitely the 007 films, without a doubt they’re my favourite. Tomb Raider comes a close second, very very close. And I think the best Bond film is Quantum of Solace I really do, because the older ones were very much focused on the future, with hi-tech gadgets and things, whereas Quantum of Solace is based on today’s technology, and if you actually watch the film and take it in properly, it is the best one.

If you could invite any 3 people in the world over for dinner, who would you choose and why: I don’t think I can narrow that down, but a few names would be Billy Connolly, Stephen Fry, and Billy’s wife, but I can’t remember her name either! Lenny Henry could come too. I’d choose these people because of their intellect and wit, and the type of person that they are.

What type of food would you serve: Most definitely a paté starter, with a 32oz steak which you would be allowed to leave if you couldn’t finish it, or pass it over to me, boatloads of chips, salad for those watching their weight, with onion rings as well and then strawberry and vanilla ice cream to follow.

What drinks would you serve A mixture – I’d suggest Guinness, White Grenache for wine, and then there’d have to be a couple of sparkling choices so that’d be Beringer and Moët.

Best attribute in people, or particularly cricketers: It’s got to be a team player.

Worst attribute in people: The opposite, somebody who plays for themselves and not for the team.

What is your biggest pet peeve: The Government obviously. No, sorry, it’s the banks now; it was the Government but now it’s the banks.

Highlight of your working life: I suppose selling on the company that I spent years building.

What is your favourite thing about summer: Being able to go to a cricket match, where I don’t have to drive so that I can enjoy a beer as I’m watching the game. Or two weeks in Corfu by the swimming pool!

If you were stranded on a desert island, what one thing would you have with you: The food section of an Asda supermarket! Either that, or it’s the fish and chip shop on Calder Road.
